Cimmerian is distinguished by its naturally smoky hue, a signature of Tunisian patchouli that inspired its name. This variety of patchouli stands out for its refined and understated character. Unlike the more robust and intense types we may be familiar with, Tunisian patchouli offers a softer, smoother profile, blending earthy and woody notes with a gentle, sweet undertone.
In Homer’s epics, the Cimmerians were described as dwelling in a land shrouded in perpetual darkness, beyond the Oceanus river encircling the Earth. The ethnic name Cimmerians may be analysed morphologically and linguistically as a Celtic or an Ossetic name. In Celtic, it may have
meant meeting of the waters, those who do battle near the water. In Ossetic, the name may have meant travel, journey or mobile unit. Such a variety of meanings reveals the enigmatic character of these people: even their name is obscure. Historians believe that these nomadic people, once defeated by the Scythians, eventually settled in the ancient kingdom of Urartu, modern-day Armenia.
